Give Generously & Reduce Taxes Through Your IRA
If you are age 70 1/2 or older, you are likely familiar with required minimum distributions (RMDs). Each year, the IRS requires you to withdraw a portion of most traditional IRAs, and those withdrawals are generally taxable.
There may be another option that can help you give to ministry while potentially lowering your taxable income.
A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows someone who is age 70 1/2 or older to give directly from an IRA to a qualified charity. When the gift is sent directly from your IRA custodian to the charity, the amount given can be excluded from your taxable income. QCDs can also count toward satisfying all or part of your annual RMD (if you are currently required to take one).
You can direct a QCD to support your church, Beaver Ridge UMC, or other ministries and causes you care about.
For many people, a QCD is one of the simplest ways to make a meaningful gift because it may reduce adjusted gross income (AGI) without needing to itemize deductions.
Important guidelines
-
Direct transfer required: The distribution must go directly from your IRA custodian to the qualified charity (a check made payable to the charity is fine). If you withdraw the funds first and then donate them, it generally will not qualify.
-
Eligibility age: You must be 70 1/2 or older at the time of the distribution.
-
Annual limit: The maximum QCD amount is set by the IRS and is indexed for inflation. For 2026, the limit is $111,000 per person (each spouse can give up to the limit from their own IRA).
-
Counts toward RMDs: If you are required to take an RMD, a QCD can satisfy all or part of it (up to the annual QCD limit).
-
Eligible recipients: QCDs must go to an eligible public charity. They generally cannot be made to donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, or most private foundations.
-
Keep documentation: Be sure to obtain a written acknowledgment from the charity for your tax records.
If you would like to make an IRA gift to Beaver Ridge UMC, we would be honored to help.
To explore this option, please contact our Business Manager, David Voyles, at 865-690-1060, or talk with your IRA custodian about directing a distribution payable to Beaver Ridge UMC.
This information is provided for general educational purposes and is not tax or legal advice. Please consult your tax advisor about how a QCD may apply to your situation.
